BASEBALL PLAGUED BY ERRORS IN CLOSE LOSS

The 'Gades wasted strong pitching with suspect defensive play against Glendale College Tuesday night.

The Bakersfield College baseball team committed five errors and lost 5-3 to Glendale College at Gerry Collis Field on Tuesday night.

The Renegades out-hit the Vaqueros 11-7. However, sloppy play in the field wasted a solid effort on the mound by BC starting pitcher Hudson Hartley, who allowed just one earned run in eight innings pitched.

The freshman right-hander gave up five hits and didn't issue any walks but was the hard-luck loser.

Down 3-0, the Renegades (9-7, 2-2 WSC) made it a game late, scoring a pair of runs on Harrison Smith's two-run single in the eighth inning.

But the BC bullpen gave both runs back and Glendale (13-5, 3-1) was able to hold on and take the first game of the three-game Western State Conference series, which continues in Glendale on Thursday.

"We didn't compete for seven innings and that's the difference in the game," BC coach Tim Painton said. "We kicked the ball all over the field. We showed up to play instead of compete…At one point we had more errors than they had hits and they were winning 3-0…I thought Hartley was awesome. He did a great job and we had nothing offensively to show for that."
