The Bakersfield College baseball team (2-1) didn't have a problem scoring runs in it's opening weekend of play, but the bullpen had a difficult time sealing the deal Saturday against the Allan Hancock Bulldogs (1-0).

"We just didn't have any command from the first pitch of the game," Coach Tim Painton said.

BC starting pitcher Hudson Hartley went 3 and 2/3rds and gave up two earned runs on four hits, but also walked five batters.

The lone bright spot on the mound for BC was relief pitcher Cain Roberts, who spelled Hartley in long relief and pitched three and one third of an inning of shutout baseball, yielding no hits and racking up two strikeouts and two walks.

"Cain's got no fear, he hasn't gotten rattled," Painton said, "He puts it over the plate and dares 'em to hit it. He went four and a third this weekend and didn't give up a single run."

But the tide turned against BC after the seventh inning.

" We turned the ball over to Gamboa who was really good for an inning the night before (against Barstow), and he didn't have command of anything," Painton said, "But he'll be better for it, it's an opening weekend loss. And he'll be better next time out. He'll get the ball in the same situation and he'll do a better job."

The weather was sloppy, wet, and cold Saturday at Gerry Collis Field which may have contributed to the staff's control issues.

"We've been practicing in the same kind of weather, so there is no excuse for what happened honestly. Three games in three days is something that we had to do right out of the gate, and it was Hancock's first game of the season. But we've got to do better in those situations," Painton said.
