The BC women's basketball team swapped the lead four times in the second half with College of the Canyons before the Cougars pulled away late for a 77-61 Western State-South Conference victory at the Gil Bishop Sports Center on Saturday.
The Renegades trailed 20-14 at halftime but rallied to take a 38-36 lead on MacKaiela Tyler's put-back with 8:36 left in the third quarter.
After that the two teams battled back and forth until the Cougars (12-4, 2-0 WSC) went on a 22-5 fourth-quarter spurt following Julie Olvera's basket in the key that gave BC (1-11, 0-2 WSC) a 50-49 advantage with 7:43 remaining in the game.
"I was so proud of my kids," BC coach Paula Dahl said. "…Canyons has been playing really well and my kids battled. That's kind of what we've done. We've done great and then we've hit that point in the fourth quarter where it's kind of like, wait we shouldn't be here."
Tyler finished with 21 points. Kennedy Nelson added 19 points for BC, which out-scored Canyons a combined 32-26 during the second and third quarters but lost due to a 31-15 fourth-quarter deficit.
"We're really getting great team-play," Dahl said. "We really disrupted them with our 2-3 zone. We made their life really, really tough and then we got away from our game-plan, started shooting too fast, panicked a little bit and let them in their running game."
Hannah Green had a game-high 24 points and grabbed 20 rebounds and Monica Friedl had 22 points and 18 rebounds for the Cougars, who extended their winning streak to seven games.
