The Bakersfield College men's basketball team turned in a strong defensive effort to beat De Anza College, 71-49 at the Gil Bishop Sports Center on Saturday.
The Renegades, making their 2016-17 home debut, held the Dons to 35.8-percent shooting from the field and led from start to finish.
"Our defense was really good," BC coach Rich Hughes said. "They're a really good offensive team…we were able to hold them below their scoring average by 20-something points so I was really pleased with our defense."
Jaylunn English had 17 points and eight rebounds for BC (4-2), which pressured De Anza (3-3) into committing 23 turnovers.
English, a 6-foot-8 freshman from Hanford was 7 of 11 shooting from the floor, including 2 of 5 from three-point range.
"It was fun to be home," Hughes said. "It's good to get a win in our home opener. We had a great crowd. Hopefully we'll get more as we keep going."
The BC men return to action on Friday when they host Cerro Coso at 1 p.m., kicking off the three-day, eight-team, Bakersfield College Renegade Thanksgiving Classic tournament.
"It's going to be a good field," Hughes said. "It's going to be a good challenge for. Hopefully we can win it."
