Pirates sweep Renegades in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD -- For THAT long a trip, you might as well win two and for the Orange Coast College softball team, it was mission accomplished as the Pirates completed a doubleheader sweep over host Bakersfield on Saturday.
The Pirates (6-1) rolled to a 14-1 rout of the Renegades in the opening game before holding on for a 4-3 win in Game 2.
In the opener, Coast fell behind 1-0 in the first before turning on the jets the rest of the way, scoring the next 14 runs, including a six-run seventh inning thanks to a 3-run double off the bat of Kileah Lologo and a three-run home run from Kelsey McNair.
McNair also showed off her stuff in the pitcher's circle, throwing three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the save with seven strikeouts over that span.
Daniella Sanchez earned the win with four strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Coast pounded out 15 hits, including a solo home run from Isabel Lopez. McKenzie Koshi went 2-for-2 with a run and three RBI in the DH opener as well.
In the nightcap, the story was pitching as the duo of McNair and Laura Episom led the way for Coast to earn the sweep. Episom started things and held the Renegades to two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts over four innings. McNair took over from there and earned her second save of the double-dip (third of the season), allowing one run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Jasmyn Morales went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Lopez added two hits and two runs scored. Vanessa Soto's solo home run in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the game-winning run for the Pirates.
The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at home against Mt. San Antonio College in a rainout makeup game, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
