Wesley Coble has been named Bakersfield College Men's Golf Coach, pending Kern Community College District Board of Trustees approval.

"We are pleased to have a man of Coach Coble's commitment to student learning and success," Athletic Director Sandi Taylor said.

The CSUB grad (BA-Communications, Master's Public Administration) has over a decade of coaching at the high school level, tennis, track, basketball, and football.

"What can I say? I love to Coach! I believe in building better people through athletics," Coble said, "and I'm humbled to join an athletic department with over 90 years of rich tradition. That's something I feel accountable to."
Bill Nelson took over as BC golf coach from the legendary Jack Frost in 1967, and spent nearly 40 years in the position while coaching men's basketball at the same time for the first six years, even though he'd never coached golf at any level before. He recommended Taylor hire Coble for the job.

"The basic thing with coaching golf is getting their attitudes right," Nelson said, "and getting them to act like citizens on the golf course which is sometimes a little difficult to do."
He said Frost had never coached before either, and that technical pointers can be given by many local golf pros, but that other characteristics were more important.
"Make them understand that they are representing the school, their  parents, and the team. And sometimes that's a little difficult to do. But that's the main thing; having them become better citizens. You've got to be at the practice rounds so you can teach them how to mind their emotions when they don't get the result they want," Nelson said.
Coble also serves as Director of Communications for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Kern County, and is married to Carley and has an eight month old daughter.
