Bakersfield College's Jakell Tomlin was named a First-Team All American Selection as announced by the California Community College Football Coaches Association and the JC Athletic Bureau Friday. 

Tomlin earned the distinction as the 2017 All-America Community College Football Team's punt returner. 

The sophomore returned 19 punts a total of 393 yards, including two for touchdowns. He averaged 20.7 yards per carry on those 19 balls to help the Renegades lead the state with a whopping 594 punt return yards. 

Tomlin's first return for a touchdown in 2017 came in a showdown of 3-1 teams in week five against El Camino. 

With less than five minutes left in the game, and BC staring down the barrel of a 17-7 defecit, Tomlin fielded an excellent 49 yard Quinn Perry punt at his own 13 yard line and ran like a man on fire for 87 yards, deftly eluding several would-be tacklers on his way to the end zone, while breathing new life in both his teammates and the Memorial Stadium crowd. 

"What number 85 (Tomlin) did was amazing. That was a turning point, for sure, and everyone on the sideline knew that we were going to find a way to win this thing," Quarterback Cesar De Leon said afterward. 

He wasn't wrong, as the Renegades recovered the football on a forced fumble by Chance Cooper on the following kickoff. They would score shortly thereafter and seal up a 21-17 victory on an unlikely fourth quarter rally spurred by Tomlin's dynamic play.
