The Bakersfield College baseball team fell behind early and never fully recovered in losing 3-2 to Fullerton College at Gerry Collis Field on Friday night.

BC starting pitcher Hudson Hartley hurled eight strong innings but gave up three runs during the game's first three innings and took the loss.

Before being lifted for reliever Oscar Gamboa at the start of the ninth inning Hartley (1-1) surrendered 10 hits and didn't issue any walks.

The Renegades (5-2) scored two runs in the fifth on Jassen Oliver's RBI triple and a RBI single by Brooks Douglass but never managed to push the tying run across despite getting two runners in scoring position in the eighth inning.

"I thought it was a well-played game on both sides," BC coach Tim Painton said. "They were one run better than we were. I felt like our kids competed well. I thought Hartley threw well...We just came up on the short end."

Douglass finished 2 for 4. He was the only BC player with multiple hits.

Hornets' starting pitcher Randall Ortiz picked up the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound right-handed had seven strikeouts and no walks.

Fullerton (4-1) out-hit BC 11-8.

The Renegades and Hornets square off again at Gerry Collis Field Saturday with first pitch slated for 12p.
