Matt Moon

Matt Moon has served as the head coach for the Bakersfield College men’s and women’s swim programs since 2012, helping to elevate Renegade Swimming through a coaching philosophy rooted in discipline, accountability, and choice.

A former standout student-athlete himself, Coach Moon began his coaching career in 2010 as a graduate assistant at Union College (KY), where he also earned a Master of Arts in Health and Physical Education. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science with a minor in Public Health from the University of the Cumberlands (2010).

Moon’s dedication to both athletic and personal development has led to impressive program accolades, including:

  • 2014 Western State Conference (WSC) Women’s Champions

  • 2014 WSC Women’s Coach of the Year

  • 2015 and 2025 WSC Men’s Coach of the Year

Moon instills a no-nonsense, high-integrity approach in his athletes with mantras like “No Complaints—No Excuses” and “Life is about choices.” He believes, “Swimming is an honest sport—you get out what you put in.” He provides structure and opportunity, but insists that true commitment and growth must come from the athlete themselves.

Before coaching, Moon swam collegiately at Bakersfield College (2008) and the University of the Cumberlands (2008–2010). His competitive success includes:

  • 3C2A All-American in the 100 & 200 Breaststroke (2008)

  • NAIA All-American Honorable Mention in the 200/400 Medley Relays (2009–2010)

  • NAIA Academic All-American (2010)

A proud Bakersfield native, Moon continues to contribute to his hometown community by leading BC to become one of the top community college swim programs in California.
